Spring is finally here, and that means it’s time to start thinking about being outside more often. We know with the cold weather of winter (and early spring around here) it can be hard to find the motivation to get outside and tackle some big outdoor projects. However, the sooner you get a move on refreshing your exterior, the longer you’ll have to enjoy it. Read below for our outdoor spring refresh tips so you can enjoy your outdoor oasis!

1. Light Things Up

If you think you’ll entertain even a little bit during those summer nights, then you’ll want to incorporate some outdoor lighting into your living space. Invite guests in with style with an illuminated entryway by installing light fixtures outside your doors and garage. When it comes to the backyard, you’ll be able to create the ideal mood lighting with a few additional ambient lights or complement your home’s style by outfitting your deck with glowing under lights. You’ll create a warm and welcoming space with these simple touches. Plus, the added curb appeal from the accentuated architectural lines of your home and the added safety and security that extra lights bring is an added bonus. Contact an electrician today to get started adding lights to your property.

2. Clean & Inspect Gutters

As the April showers roll through, your home will be thanking you when you’ve cleared out all the debris and gunk from your gutters. While this task can seem painstaking, it is vital to keeping water out of your home. Start by clearing out as much debris as possible, and hose off anything that remains. Running water from a hose will also help you check for leaks. Make sure your downspouts are draining away from your home to prevent flooding to your home. They need to drain a recommended five feet away from your foundation to ensure your crawl space or basement stays dry. If you’re worried about plumbing problems around your basement or foundation, call your local plumbing professional to inspect.

3. Service Your AC Unit

Your AC unit is a big player in your home’s comfort level and monthly energy bills. The best way to ensure that your unit is running efficiently means having a qualified heating and cooling specialist inspect and perform preventative maintenance on your unit. This will extend its lifespan and save you money. If you’re worried you’ll forget to have your home inspected or you’d prefer a greater peace of mind, then you may want to consider signing up for a home maintenance plan. Have preventative maintenance done without shelling out the big bucks and know that your home will be in good hands. Some HVAC maintenance that you can perform on your own is to clean condenser coils in the AC unit and change any air filters around your house. These routine tasks keep your system performing in top condition.

4. Clean Outdoor Furniture

With warm, soapy water wipe down any furniture that’s been left outside. You can even drag it out into the sun, hose it down and leave it to dry out. While you’re waiting on that furniture to dry, take the covers off of any pillows or cushions and wash if necessary. When it comes to sprucing up decor, a few simple pieces can make a big difference. Think small decor accents like lanterns, candles, a rug, or even a new pillow or two. Or if you’re looking for a bigger change, you can always splurge on one really great statement piece like a wicker couch or dining table for all your guests to gather together.

5. Landscape

Whether it’s pulling weeds or trimming overgrown shrubbery, doing some much-needed yard work will really improve the overall appearance of your home. If you’re looking to start fresh with your landscaping or hoping to expand on the flowers that you planted last year, make sure to start with a plan. Major landscaping can require a lot of digging. I you aren’t positive where power lines, plumbing, water or gas mains are buried, have a professional verify that you’re safe to get started. Planting flowers is a sure-fire way to add some color and life in your yard. Create a focal point or use big plants for privacy – either way the choice is yours! Don’t forget that plants make a great solution for improving indoor air quality inside your home as well.
