You might believe that the winter season with its frozen pipes is when most plumbing issues occur. However, the warmer weather can bring along issues big and small for your home, too. Summer plumbing problems can arise because of the extra wear and tear your home is receiving with guest visiting from out of town, the kids being home from school, and outdoor summer activities. Here are the five most common summer plumbing problems to keep an eye out for this time of year.
1. Flooding in Basement
Summer rain occurs more often than you might think, especially here in the south. Sometimes unexpected downpours can quickly turn into a flooding problem. Double check your sump pump is in good order after the winter months to avoid summer flooding in your basement.
2. Clogged Disposal
Summer is the best time for cookouts and fresh fruit! That also implies lots of leftovers. Make sure you’re disposing of food properly and know exactly what can and cannot go down your drain. Clogged disposals are very common in the summer because fruit pits or grease from grilling will quickly clog your disposal and prevent it from running properly.
3. Washing Machine Maintenance
All the summer activities can put a strain on your washing machine. Heavy loads seem to be a normal occurrence in summer which can lead to blockages and overflows. Try to stick to small loads to avoid problems. Regularly check the hoses from your machine for leakages or kinks and consider moving your washing machine out from the wall a little to reduce the risk of overheating. We recommend rinsing off at the beach, outside, or in a public shower before using your own to avoid ankle deep water pooling in your shower. Another tip to avoid clogged drains is to keep an eye on the drain cover and to remove hair that gets stuck in there.
